J 3 cub navy version

J 3 cub navy version

A friend of mine is restoring a vintage J 3. He is deciding on a paint scheme. He had heard of a Naval version painted in naval gray. He has photos of the green army, and yellow standard versions, but we cannot find a photo of the naval gray. Does anyone have a photo, or know where we can view one in the navy colors?

Re: J 3 cub navy version

By the way, does your buddy have one of the L4 variants, or is it a J3C, J3L, or J3F ?  Note that a lot of the L4's were reregistered as J3's at the end of the war.  Is he going with the L4 or the J3 birdcage?

Re: J 3 cub navy version

It's a J3, but the birdcage he's redoing with the L4 specs. He lives on a private grass strip, and the previous owner banged it up one day. My buddy bought it on the spot a couple of years ago. New wings, and is now redoing the cage.

Re: J 3 cub navy version

We have a Navy NE2, Navy designation for the J3/L4.  The serial number

is one of the twenty ordered by the Navy in 1945 and delivered Aug 1,

1945.  Our NE2 was never removed from the packing crate by the Navy and

was purchased by a California FBO in Nov 1946.

Restored in 1994/1995 in OD Green with Navy markings.  We found only on

original photograph of a NE2 and it retained the OD green Army colors.

We offer any assistance you may require in completing your project.

Send your email address and we will attach some photos.

Yes, but is it a J3C, J3F, or J3L (they are on different type certificates, and it makes a difference to the restoration).

Note that on the rare 3-tone navy variants of the NE-1 (fixed pitch prop), the leading edge of the wing was painted the dark sea blue, and if I remember correctly, the bottom of the wings were white while the tops were the intermediate blue.  I've seen a couple of 'restorations' that had the narrow red band around the insignia, but that was only used for about a 6 month time span after the war and to the best of my knowledge, was never used on a cub.

As an aside, the NE-2 is similar to the NE-1, but had an adjustable pitch prop.  Many of the NE-1's were Cub yellow like the civilian versions, and a number of them retained the civilian D-windows (I'm sure Del is aware of this).

Is your buddy going with the early 3-piece windscreen, or the later 1-piece?

Be sure to look at the two photos of 'Glimpy', the radio controlled
NE-1 that was intended to be dropped from airships while carrying a depth charge.  It was not quite a standard 3-tone pattern, but was very pretty in it's own right.

Del, I'm thinking about rebuilding my PA-11 as sort of 'stand-off' tribute to the NE-1 and NE-2, using the 3-tone paint scheme modified for an 11..  If you don't mind, I'd like to pick your brain a bit as time goes along.
