What does the "Merge Posts?" option do when replying?

What does the "Merge Posts?" option do when replying?

When posting new topics, two options are presented: "Hide Smilies" and "Subscribe". When adding a reply to an existing topic, a third option is available: "Merge posts?"

What does that option do?

I get the dreaded 404 error when I try to open the link to the info on " Merge Posts ".

Any other link to the tutorial?
