Lycoming 0-540-L3C5D in a Cherokee 235

Lycoming 0-540-L3C5D in a Cherokee 235

I was just wondering if anyone has ever looked into putting a turbo charged O-540-L3C5D into a Cherokee 235.  The reason I came up with this idea was to compete with the T182's.  Our aircraft can haul more and are better performers down low but the T182 has the advantage of turbo charging, giving it the advantage up high.  I figured that the only difference between the O-540-B4B5 and the O-540-L3C5D is the turbo charger itself.  They are even both rated at 235 hp and look like they could be basically bolted in.  I did do some research on RayJay turbos since they were available for the PA32-260 but they were never available for the 235 and from what I understand aren't really available at present anyway.  Any thoughts???

Hey Brian!

You would have to get an STC on that. There is a guideline AC 8900.1 which lists different types of modifications and how the FAA requires approval. It is considered a major design change so an STC, even if it is a one time only STC, would have to be done. You would have to do flight tests and a bunch of engineering and then get it through an FAA engineering office. You could expect a year plus to get it done. You would also have to get it put under an experimental certificate to fly for the testing, but there are restictions for that too. This is one of the biggest problems with trying to improve older aircraft. The approvals are a nightmare.

Hi Eric!

Sounds like too much work then.  It would have been a nice addition to the project you're working on  don't you think?

Eric, you should at least try to return my phone calls and/or e-mails.  Brian
