KLN89B IFR Cert
Re: KLN89B IFR Cert
JB,
Bob Hart is the expert on this and he will probably chime in when he sees your post. In order to be IFR certified you need the 89b, the annunciator and a cdi that works with your 89b. The annunciator also has to be in clear view for the pilot. I am not sure where that is but mine is located on the right side of the panel and is not where it needs to be. A cdi would run you about $800 and the work to certify it could be anywhere from 8 to 10 hours. I opted to not have mine changed and will save up for a used 430W.
Re: KLN89B IFR Cert
Hi Jbattaile (and thanks for the kinds words, Mr Myers!) I hope you did not buy the MD40-232 yet! It certainly works but it's the expensive way to do it because, it meets the annunciator requirement for the KLN-89B but it does not meet the "switching" requirment. The KLN-89B requires an external momemtary switch to "ARM & Activate" the approach. This function, surprisingly, is not in the GPS. If you own the MD40-232, your installer will need to add a TSO's Lighted momuntary switch to the install for the ARM/Activate function. If you don't own the MD40, I recommend the Annunciator panel from AmeriKing or Mid-Continent. I've sold many of both, they both work fine but the AmeriKing is the bargain!
For an indicator, I recomment the Bendix King KI-202 CDI. it's 3 1/8" (vs. the 2" MD-40) The KI-202's run about $895 SV with 8130-3 tag. Thanks! Bob Hart APG-Eastern Avionics
