Asking for Aircraft parts and maintenance help

I've been helping members solve their persnickety airplane maintenance and parts problems for a long time and I thought a few tips would help you get the assistance you need quicker and with fewer communications on the forum. My experience is that if you need a new spark plug, for example, many people ask like this: "How much is a spark plug for my Warrior and where do I get it?" Understand that I do not have every parts and maintenance manual for every aircraft ever built. Rather, you need to ask the question like this: "I have a 1976 Piper Warrior PA-28-151, engine model number O320-D2A. The plugs are Champion REM-40E's. Where do I purchase them and how much are they?" If you don't have the actual part numbers, you will need to purchase a parts and service manual and have them in your library. They are available from the following sources for less than $50.00 each: https://www.eflightmanuals.com/ or http://www.esscoaircraft.com/. Using the example above as a model will get you the information you need quickly and efficiently.

  • I have a 1971 PA-28 140 with 160 Ram upgrade. Nose strut has gone down and checked fluid and added nitrogen. Strut went down again. AP/IA helped replace seals and strut went down again. Pulled and found o-ring had peeled a little from assembly. What is the trick to reassemble without this happening?
    Thank you

  • Stand by, I'll send this to our association A&P Erich Rempert.

  • Here's a response from Erich:

Coat the seals and chrome in 5606 hydraulic fluid before installation. Vaseline would also work on the seals.

Be careful to prevent damage while inserting the strut in the tube-

    It happens…

  • Hi,

I have a 2018 PA-28-181. Shop says I need a new muffler. Says it will be $4,700 plus labor. It is PN 104628-002. I found a rebuilt one from Aircraft Spruce (3 week back order) for $3067. Can anyone offer any other (cheaper) options?

  • That is insane. I would check with a place like Acorn welding

That is a really short muffler lifetime on a 2018 plane too. It should be possible to repair.

  • Here is the email I got from the shop:

N195MA is going to need an exhaust muffler replaced soon due to center core deterioration. Part number for the low noise muffler (optional equipment) is 104628-002. Only source we have found is direct Piper, and your cost is approximately $4750.00. Let us know if you have a better discount or know of a better option than just outright purchase from Piper

  • I am looking for fuel valve rebuild kit for a Airborne valve model 1H-26-2 serial #6K. It is on my Pa32. Cherakee 6-300 1966. Not to be confused with the piper manual #760895 which is listed as a fuel valve kit @ $14k. I appreciate your help, Thank you.

  • Here is a post from 2012 with some leads to follow up on. This is not for your exact valve. Would be great if McFarlane moved into Piper valve support as they do a great job with most of the cessna series.
