Handheld microphone

Is the handheld microphone considered required equipment in a PA-28-140?

I see it listed in the parts catalog (Section X, figure 92) with "No. Req" of 1, but I'm wondering if it is really a necessary part of airworthiness. How about if it is just unplugged and kept stowed somewhere in the plane?

  • Hi Bovine, I started flying in 1971 and back then, a handheld mic was the standard. headsets had not really caught on. Today, everyone wears headsets and the handheld mic is there primarily as a back-up. It's a good idea. the mic in a headset can fail and then the handheld mic (which is normally wired in parallel) becomes the standard! It makes sense to have a provision in the aircraft for the handheld mic and yes, it could be stored away but I would suggest easily available. If your in controlled airspace and in frequent communication with ATC, you want to be able to get at it quickly if you need it! Bob Hart www.AvionixHelp.com
