aircraft purchase question

Just looking for some dialogue,
I own a warrior..151...it suits my needs just fine. I like short hops with the kids for lunch. However, I am about to put a new engine in it, and before I sink about 30k into it I thought I should consider an archer or something. I bought the plan for 20, plus the 30 for the engine I will be in it for over 50k..

I have a wife and 2 small kids so you never know what the future holds, right now my family would rather non rev (am an airline pilot) for anything over 2hrs flight, so I am not sure I need anything bigger, but I need to consider it before I buy the engine.

How does the archer compare to the warrior?

thoughts on other airplanes as well?

thanks
Kevin

  • For $50k your can have a turbo arrow, lol. However, when my Warrior needed an engine I traded airplanes to a larger engine. If you like the panel, airframe and hours upgrade the engine. If you don't like the panel, airframe or hours sell it and get a new, longer term airplane. I know where you can get a cheap 757! :)

  • What are the factors leading you towards choosing a whole new engine?

  • I am at TBO...though everything is perfect with the engine, I have an 11 year old that will be training in a few years and I will want at least 200 hrs on the engine before that happens.

    I do about 40-60hrs a year.

  • I understand about your concern for your child in your airplane but give this some thought. An overhauled engine is not necessarily more reliable then an engine at TBO. What make and model engine is it?

  • Bank the money until the engine tells you it needs to be overhauled. Oil analysis

  • And... have an engine monitor to help tell you when it's time.

  • yea, I know the new engines are actually more Unreliable, which is why I want to get about 150-200 hrs on it before my child start flight training in the airplane.

I get the oil analyzed twice a year...so far all is good.

  • Ok, good. :)
