New FAA Policy Helps Modernize GA Airplanes and Helicopters
A new FAA policy encourages general aviation aircraft owners to voluntarily install safety equipment on airplanes and helicopters that is not required by the agencys regulations. It will reduce costs and streamline the installation of Non-Required Safety Enhancing Equipment (NORSEE) into the general aviation fleet. Equipment approved as NORSEE increases overall situational awareness; provides additional information other than the aircraft primary system; provides independent warning, cautionary, or advisory indications; and provides additional occupant safety protection. Examples of NORSEE equipment include: traffic advisory systems, terrain awareness and warning systems; attitude indicators; fire extinguishing systems; and autopilot or stability augmentation systems. Are you Ready for AirVenture?
The Worlds Greatest Aviation Celebration EAAs AirVenture will kick off on Monday, July 25. The weeklong event is scheduled to attract more than 500,000 visitors and more than 10,000 aircraft which will arrive at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh, Wisc., as well as other surrounding airports. If youre headed that way, be sure to carefully read and adhere to the procedures in the special event Notice to Airmen (NOTAM). Flight planning for AirVenture should include thorough familiarity with NOTAM procedures, as well as knowledge of primary and alternate airports. Carry a copy of the NOTAM for in-flight reference, which can be downloaded at www.faa.gov/air_traffic/publications/notices/media/07_21_16_ntap.pdf (see Section 5).
If you are at AirVenture, be sure to stop by the FAA Safety Center and catch one the nearly 40 safety seminars scheduled between 0830 and 1645. ABCs of ACS
In case you havent heard, the FAA has launched an exciting improvement that will enable testing and training standards for pilots to keep pace with todays operating environment. The Airman Certification Standards (ACS) officially rolled out June 15 to replace the Practical Test Standards (PTS) for the private pilot (airplane) certificate and the instrument (airplane) rating.
